Finances

Managing money is an essential part of life and this tab contains a few things I have learned along the way and things I'm still learning about. It will be updated as I come across more valuable information.

Savings: Times are tough, whether you're a single woman or one with a family. Prices keep going up with no sign of relief in sight. But no matter your situation, it is very important to put money away so that you're prepared for whatever curve ball life may throw your way. It has always been my habit to pay myself first every payday. I put 10% of each paycheck away so there is a cushion waiting in case of an emergency. And no, retail therapy does not count as an emergency (though sometimes it does feel like an emergency when you've had a really bad day or week and need a quick pick-me-up)

Budgeting: I'll be honest- this is something that I'm not all that good at. No, I'm not saying that I frivolously spend my money- my priorities are quite straight. But I am learning how to better manage my funds.

Piggy Bank: Yes, I really do have a piggy bank! It's metallic and, of course, pink. I used to stash whatever cash I had in my piggy and would pull it out whenever I needed it. But a few months ago, I decided that I would make that my emergency cash stash. Sometimes when I get change back (only paper money) from a purchase, I forget about it... it stays in my coat pocket or the back pocket of my jeans. So I frequently end up putting my hands in my pockets and find money. That forgotten money now goes in my piggy bank so that I will always have cash at home if I ever need it.

Cash Stash: Most people don't like to do so, but I have learned that you should always keep some cash on hand. If your bank card gets de-magnitized or the ATM decides to not cooperate, you at least have the option of buying whatever you need with cash (emphasis on the word "need"). It doesn't have to be a lot of cash... just enough to buy essentials such as food, gas, diapers, etc.- whatever your life calls for..
